In many ages and cultures, entoptic phenomena were seen and interpreted by spiritual women and men during altered states of consciousness. This article presents facts and thoughts about the scientific study of Palaeolithic and contemporary shaman art which is suggested to be inspired by entoptic phenomena.
The following feedback was sent by reader Chris.
I know you have been making money on the idea that eye floaters are links to the spirit. The fact is, any thing can be a link to the spirit if an individual simply seeks the spirit. Eye floaters are no more or less magical than anything. Close your eyes. What do you see in the darkness? Is it not the same magic that you might see if you focus on the 'open eyed' dust floating on your retina. Close your eyes again. Do you not feel and see the same magic as you do with your eyes open? Please respond at your leisure, my dear friend.”
What I see really - Eye Floaters (Mouches volantes) or "open eyed dust"? (source)
Hi Chris, I agree. Anything can be a link to the spirit, if an individual seeks the spirit. But the fact is also, this link came to me in form of eye floaters. So why not write about that? I don't think my journey and research regarding floaters is the only path to spiritual growth. Funny you tell me to close my eyes. When I close my eyes, I see colored luminous spots in my dark visual field. While Western physiology may refer to them as ‘phosphenes’, I indeed think it's the same phenomenon as floaters, seen under different (light) conditions. But as I said, if you rather concentrate on a stone or a prayer or anything, it may have similar or the same spiritual results. I don’t
agree with you on two issues: First, the floaters I am referring
to are not ‘open eyed dust’ on the retina in my opinion.
This is an unproven claim by some ophthalmologists. And second, writing
books doesn’t pay unless you’re a real crack or an imperturbable
idealist. Floco

do you have personal experiences with eye floaters or other entoptic
phenomena? Or any suggestions what they could be? Send your hints, experiences

Eye floaters and their meaning were interpreted differently depending on the time, culture and personality of the observer. We learn a spiritually meaningful perspective about floaters from Nestor, the seer, with whom I have studied and whose teachings I recorded in the book „Mouches volantes – Eye Floaters as Shining Structure of Consciousness“. In this category, a particular statement from the book on floaters shall be presented and explained.
From: Mouches Volantes – Eye Floaters. The Shining Structure of Consciousness, p. 193. (source)
Moving dots and strands in the visual field – what to do? The above statement by Nestor is an answer to that question. We are familiar with the usual reactions of people to floaters: most of them ignore or accept their dots and strings without worrying too much. Some people, however, are so disturbed by them that they seek medical advice or even surgical measures. For those who are worried about their dots and strands, Nestor offers an alternative, based on his visionary experience. This proposal has two aspects: first, we need to simply observe the fact that something has changed in our visual field. This is about seeing floaters as an expression of a de facto change without already judging this as good or bad. According to Nestor, it’s not the eye floaters that cause fear, resentment, or even joy; rather, these feelings are already present in us, while floaters (among other things in life) are a projection screen for them. This is the reason why no one sufferering from floaters would lead a life free of fear if his or her floaters disappeared overnight. Conversely, and
this is the second aspect of Nestor’s proposal, working with our
dots and strings can dissolve negative feelings. This is achieved by extensive
and regular seeing and focusing on them. This exercise is said to lead
to the realization of what floaters “really are”. The claim
about liberation from fear and the gain in knowledge by looking at eye
floaters seems hard to comprehend. It makes sense if we, as Nestor
does, understand seeing as a kind of open eye meditation. “Seeing”
means a continuous perception which leaves no room for anxiety provoking
thoughts and judgments. Moreover, this inner silence is said to develop
intuitive insights on the object of meditation.
The category "Quarterly Picture" introduces realistic, artistic, and/or spiritual/religious representations from different cultures and times which could show entoptic phenomena, or be inspired by it. Enso, the “circle”, is one of the most common themes of Japanese calligraphy and is also widespread in everyday Japan. Thick or thin circles, open or closed, accurate or spiritedly distorted, empty or filled with symbols: in all its variations, the Enso symbolizes spiritual awakening and the existence in the here and now; it also stands for power, elegance, the universe and emptiness. In Zen Buddhism, the Enso is a popular and sacred motif, and many Zen artists use the individual Enso representation as a kind of signature for their religious art.
While many cultures and religious traditions know the circle as a symbol of the divine, the perfect, the absolute, the Japanese Enso is not only associated with manifold interpretations as well as metaphysical and philosophical ideas. It also reflects the state of consciousness of the artist. The way a person paints an Enso sheds light on his mental state and spiritual progress. On the other hand, the painting of the Enso is a spiritual practice in order to concentrate the mind on the perfect. Besides the ever-existing possibility that the circle symbolism is inspired by the observation of floater dots, it’s precisely this equation of circle and consciousness that relates the Japanese Enso to eye floaters: in both cases, a person discloses himself by the circles that he produces mentally or bodily; the appearance of the circles or spheres reveals his state of mind. But while Japanese calligraphers, by painting an Enso, objectify an individual and momentary state of consciousness, the seers observe the permanent change in their states of consciousness in their subjective visual circles, the floaters. At least a little Enso mood comes up when we not only observe floaters but also try to adequately draw the observed. This constant alternation of seeing and drawing is a challenge in itself and can have a meditative effect beyond the fine art of calligraphy.
